Annual free event invites families to explore public works vehicles, emergency equipment and the people who keep the city running during National Public Works Week
From climbing into the cab of a garbage truck to meeting a police K-9 and exploring a fire engine up close, Folsom’s popular City Works Day is returning later this month with another hands-on celebration of the city services that operate behind the scenes every day.
Hosted by the City of Folsom as part of National Public Works Week, the free community event will take place Wednesday, May 20, at City Lions Park, offering families, students and residents a chance to interact with the workers, vehicles and equipment that help maintain the city’s infrastructure, safety and quality of life.
City Works Day has become one of Folsom’s favorite educational community events, particularly among children eager to climb aboard oversized work vehicles and learn how city departments operate. Throughout the morning, visitors will be able to explore an array of public works and emergency response equipment, including garbage trucks, construction vehicles, fire apparatus, police units and other specialty machinery used throughout the city.

Among the returning attractions this year will be opportunities to hop into the cab of a Folsom garbage truck, make it “rain” at an interactive stormwater table display, visit with Curby the recycling robot, and meet members of the Folsom Police Department’s mounted patrol and K-9 teams. Folsom Fire Department personnel will also be on hand with engines and equipment while staff from multiple city departments answer questions and provide demonstrations.
The annual event serves as both a family-friendly outing and an educational experience designed to showcase the many city services residents often take for granted. Public works professionals across the nation are recognized during National Public Works Week for the critical role they play in maintaining transportation systems, utilities, storm drainage, public facilities and emergency response support services.

Folsom officials say the event also gives younger generations a chance to learn about potential careers in public service while creating a stronger connection between residents and the city employees who work behind the scenes every day.
The event is free to attend and open to all ages. City Lions Park is located adjacent to the Folsom Public Library in Historic Folsom.
