Hit family musical enters its third week, taking audiences back to the unforgettable days of Danny, Sandy and the gang
After a successful pair of weekends, Grease School Version is settling into its summer run at Sutter Street Theatre, where audiences continue to be transported back to the halls of Rydell High and the unforgettable world of Danny, Sandy, the Pink Ladies and the T-Birds.
Now entering its third week, the beloved musical is drawing families and theater lovers to Historic Folsom for an energetic production that captures the spirit, music and nostalgia that have made Grease one of the most enduring musicals of all time.
Presented as part of Sutter Street Theatre’s Family Series, the production is directed by Crystal Mayer, with music direction by Christine Irish and choreography by Keira LePage.
Set in 1959, Grease tells the story of summer sweethearts Danny Zuko and Sandy Dumbrowski, whose romance is put to the test after they unexpectedly reunite as students at Rydell High. As they navigate the pressures of fitting in with their classmates, the two discover that staying true to themselves isn’t always easy.
The story comes alive through colorful characters, energetic choreography and a soundtrack packed with familiar favorites, including “Summer Nights” and “Greased Lightnin’.” Along the way, audiences reunite with the iconic Pink Ladies and Danny’s greaser friends, the T-Birds, whose friendships, rivalries and antics have entertained generations of theatergoers.
First introduced on Broadway in 1972, Grease has become one of the most recognizable musicals ever written, earning worldwide acclaim for its nostalgic celebration of teenage life, rock-and-roll music and unforgettable characters. The School Version retains the heart and excitement of the original while offering a family-friendly adaptation suitable for audiences of all ages.
Rated G, the production contains no content warnings and provides an ideal opportunity for families to introduce younger generations to one of musical theater’s most beloved classics while longtime fans relive the songs and characters they have enjoyed for decades.
Performances continue through July 26 with Saturday and Sunday matinees at 1 p.m. Additional evening performances are scheduled for Friday, July 10, and Saturday, July 11, at 7:30 p.m. There are no performances during Fourth of July weekend.
Something Happened on the Way to the Forum Continues Summer Laughs
While audiences continue to enjoy the music and nostalgia of Grease, Sutter Street Theatre’s main stage is also home to Stephen Sondheim’s acclaimed musical comedy Something Happened on the Way to the Forum, which continues through July 19.
Directed by Allen Schmeltz, the Tony Award-winning Broadway classic follows the hilarious adventures of Pseudolus, a clever slave determined to earn his freedom through a series of increasingly outrageous schemes. Filled with mistaken identities, rapid-fire comedy and memorable musical numbers—including the famous opening song “Comedy Tonight”—the production offers a completely different theatrical experience from Grease while showcasing the versatility of Sutter Street Theatre’s summer lineup.
Together, the two productions offer audiences the opportunity to experience everything from the nostalgic rock-and-roll halls of Rydell High to the comedic chaos of ancient Rome, making this one of the busiest and most diverse summer seasons in the theater’s history.
