This holiday season, Sutter Street Theatre invites families to experience the warmth and heart of A Laura Ingalls Wilder Christmas, a touching new play based on the beloved Little House author’s life that opens at the Historic Folsom community theater this week.
Directed by Joaquin Calderon, the production runs from its opener this Friday, December 13 through December 29, with performances on Fridays at 4:00 PM and Saturdays and Sundays at 1:00 PM. Additional performances will be held on December 18th and 19th at 4:00 PM.
The original play, written by Laurie Brooks, takes a deep dive into a challenging winter in the Ingalls family’s life—one that has never been fully explored in the Little House books. Set during a devastating time for the family, when locusts have destroyed their crops and they are mourning the death of baby Freddie, the story focuses on Laura’s emotional journey. As her family relocates to Burr Oak, Iowa, where Pa (Charles Ingalls) runs a hotel, Laura is faced with difficult choices, including dealing with the local “worst boy in Iowa,” Johnny Steadman, and the potential offer of adoption from the wealthy Mrs. Starr. As Christmas approaches, Laura must decide between staying with her family or taking a different path.
“A Laura Ingalls Wilder Christmas” presents a heartwarming tale of family, resilience, and love. Through period songs, humor, and poignant moments, the play offers a rare glimpse into the “missing” two years of the Ingalls family’s life—an era Laura chose not to write about. This emotionally resonant story celebrates the enduring bonds that hold a family together, even in the toughest of times.
