The Folsom Lake Symphony will bring a night of romance and tragedy to the stage with its upcoming concert, Star-Crossed Lovers, featuring music from West Side StoryCarmen, and The Butterfly Lovers’ Violin Concerto. The performance is set for 7:30 p.m. Saturday, March 1, at the Harris Center for the Arts.

The program includes Leonard Bernstein’s Symphonic Dances from West Side Story, a selection of nine excerpts from the 1957 Broadway musical, which was inspired by Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet and explores tensions between rival gangs in mid-20th-century New York City. Also featured is Georges Bizet’s Carmen, an opera known for its memorable melodies and dramatic tale of passion and betrayal between Don José, a Spanish soldier, and Carmen, a free-spirited Romani woman.

A highlight of the evening will be The Butterfly Lovers’ Violin Concerto, one of the most famous works of Chinese orchestral music. Written for solo violin and a Western-style orchestra, the piece is based on The Butterfly Lovers, a legend selected as one of China’s Four Great Folk Tales during the 1920s Folklore Movement.

South Korean violinist Ji in Yang will take the stage as the featured soloist. A seasoned performer, she has appeared with major orchestras in the United States and her native Korea, including the KBS Symphony Orchestra and the Bucheon, Suwon, and Ulsan Philharmonic Orchestras. Yang holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the Juilliard School, an Artist Diploma from Yale University, and a Doctor of Musical Arts degree from City University of New York. She plays a 1723 Petrus Guarnerius violin made in Venice.
