The cherished tale of the March sisters will come to life on stage in Historic Folsom as Little Women the Musical opens at Sutter Street Theatre on Friday, June 13, kicking off a monthlong run of heartfelt performance based on the classic novel
Located in the heart of Folsom’s Historic District, Sutter Street Theatre is preparing to launch its latest production, Little Women the Musical, bringing the classic story of the March sisters to the stage. The theatre regularly presents a variety of productions ranging from timeless stories to youth performances, and this summer’s offering continues that tradition with a family-friendly adaptation of Louisa May Alcott’s well-known novel.
The musical is adapted from Little Women, a coming-of-age novel by American author Louisa May Alcott, originally published in two volumes in 1868 and 1869. The story follows the lives of four sisters—Meg, Jo, Beth, and Amy March—as they grow from childhood into adulthood during the Civil War era. Loosely based on Alcott’s own life and that of her three sisters, the novel is considered semi-autobiographical and was a critical and commercial success from the start. The second volume, which continued the sisters’ journey into marriage and maturity, was published after strong demand from readers.

In 1880, the two volumes were combined into the single novel widely known today as Little Women. Alcott followed with two sequels, Little Men in 1871 and Jo’s Boys in 1886, all of which continued to explore the lives of the March family. Scholars have noted the book’s central themes of domesticity, work, and love, highlighting how each is essential to the development of the novel’s heroines. The story’s appeal has stood the test of time, with numerous stage and screen adaptations that have introduced new generations to its enduring message.
Little Women the Musical brings that story to the stage with a book by Allan Knee, music by Jason Howland, and lyrics by Mindi Dickstein. The production centers on Jo March, an aspiring writer who begins crafting stories inspired by her own life and the lives of her sisters. Through her writing, audiences experience the family’s joys, struggles, and triumphs in a world marked by societal expectations and personal growth.
Directed by Kenny Brian Gagni, with vocal direction by Connie Mockenhaupt and assistance from Lindy Mallonee, the Sutter Street Theatre production promises to deliver a heartfelt and engaging performance for audiences of all ages.
Performances are scheduled on Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30 p.m. and Sundays at 4:30 p.m. from June 13 through July 13. With an estimated runtime of two hours and fifteen minutes and a family-friendly G rating, Little Women the Musical offers an ideal summer outing for theatergoers.
