22nd season opens with works of Beethoven, Mussorgsky Oct.11

The Folsom Lake Symphony will open its 22nd season with a program of stirring classics and a world-renowned soloist when “The Big Picture” takes the stage on Oct. 11 at 7:30 p.m. inside the Harris Center for the Arts.

The evening pairs two of the most celebrated works in the orchestral repertoire: Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 3 and Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition, later orchestrated by Maurice Ravel. Acclaimed pianist Terrence Wilson, recognized for his virtuosity and powerful artistry, will join the symphony as guest soloist.

Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 3 is known for its dramatic journey from stormy conflict to radiant triumph, its bold piano lines offering both brilliance and emotional weight. Wilson, hailed by the Baltimore Sun as “one of the biggest pianistic talents to have emerged in this country in the last 25 years,” brings his international experience and acclaimed technique to the work.

The program concludes with Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition, a vivid orchestral showcase that transforms visual art into sound. Originally composed for piano, the suite was later arranged by Ravel into a dazzling tour-de-force, each movement painting musical portraits of works by artist Viktor Hartmann.

Wilson’s career highlights include solo performances with major American orchestras in Atlanta, Baltimore, Cincinnati, Dallas, San Francisco, St. Louis, Cleveland, Minnesota and Philadelphia, as well as international engagements with the Lausanne Chamber Orchestra in Switzerland, the Malaysian Philharmonic and the Royal Scottish National Orchestra. He has received numerous honors, including the SONY ES Award for Musical Excellence, an Avery Fisher Career Grant and the Juilliard Petschek Award, and in 2011 he earned a Grammy nomination for Best Instrumental Soloist with an Orchestra. A graduate of The Juilliard School, Wilson continues to perform on stages worldwide.
