FOLSOM—The Piazza at Palladio will come alive this Friday, October 3, when local favorites Have Mercy! return to the stage for the latest installment of the Friday Night Live Music in the Piazza fall series. The free show runs from 7 to 9 p.m. and promises a night of crowd-pleasing hits and plenty of Folsom flair.
Not to be confused with any similarly named act, Have Mercy!—exclamation point included—has been a fixture in the region since the 1990s. The band first formed when a group of doctors from Mercy Folsom Hospital decided to play at a staff party. What began as a one-off performance quickly grew into a long-running tradition of mixing music, humor, and a bit of medical flair. Today, their blend of rock, soul, and good-natured fun has earned them a loyal following across Northern California.
From Springsteen to the Stones, Creedence to The Beatles, their setlist spans decades of classic hits designed to get audiences singing and dancing. Fans can expect to hear everything from “867-5309/Jenny” and “Sweet Caroline” to “Johnny B. Goode,” “Twist and Shout,” “Wagon Wheel,” “Old Time Rock and Roll,” and “Hit Me With Your Best Shot.” The band also mixes in cheeky originals such as “It’s Called Polio” and “Managed Care Blues,” which showcase both their wit and their musical chops.
Have Mercy! is more than just a band—it’s a colorful cast of professionals moonlighting as rockers. Eliot Drell, MD, known on stage as “Doc E,” fronts the group on vocals, with fellow lead singer and rhythm guitarist Phil Baldi, DO, and his sister Rosemary Younts adding powerhouse vocals. Chuck Noble, Esq., takes the lead guitar, while Rob DeBruin, MD, adds harmonica and acoustic guitar. HW Sundermier, MD, manages the group and plays saxophone, with John “G.I. John” Willis on bass, Pete Crispell on drums, and Guy Guilfoy, MD, rounding out the sound with backup bass and technical support.
The Friday Night Live series has already featured standout performances from Wasted Space and G-Ride, and will continue through October 17 with more free concerts in the Piazza at Palladio.
