Beloved musical comedy continues its run in Historic Folsom with laughs, heart and sharp observation
As its run continues in Historic Folsom, the musical comedy I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change is heading into its second week at Sutter Street Theatre, delivering another audience-favorite production that blends humor, honesty and music into a smart look at relationships in all their stages.
Presented by Sutter Street Theatre, the show has quickly become a standout of the winter lineup, drawing theatergoers for its fast-moving structure and highly relatable moments. Told through a series of short, sharply written vignettes, the musical explores love from first dates and misunderstandings to long-term commitment, routine, and rediscovery, capturing the small moments that define how people connect over time.
With music by Jimmy Roberts and book and lyrics by Joe DiPietro, the production balances comedy with emotional truth, offering plenty of laughs while touching on the universal questions and frustrations that come with relationships. The material resonates with a wide range of audiences, from couples on date night to longtime partners and friends who recognize themselves in the characters and situations on stage.

The Sutter Street Theatre production is directed, choreographed and musically directed by Connie Mockenhaupt, with Eileen Beaver serving as co-director. Together, the creative team brings a polished and energetic presentation to the intimate Historic Folsom venue, keeping the pacing tight and the performances engaging as the show moves rapidly from scene to scene.
The musical has earned widespread critical praise over the years for its sharp writing and memorable score. Newsday once described the show as a blind date audiences would feel “relieved, grateful and pleasantly surprised” by, while Variety praised its catchy tunes and witty lyrics, qualities that are on full display in the current Sutter Street Theatre production.
