Interactive musical morning features Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra and local teen soloist
Families across the region are invited to experience the sights, sounds and excitement of a live orchestra when Folsom Lake Symphony presents its Family Concert: A Young Person’s Guide & Instrument Petting Zoo on Saturday, March 14, 2026 at 11 a.m. at the Harris Center for the Arts.
Designed for listeners of all ages, the lively one-hour program blends education and entertainment, offering an engaging introduction to the instruments of the orchestra and the power of symphonic music.
The featured work is Benjamin Britten’s The Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra, a beloved composition that highlights each section of the orchestra in turn — from woodwinds and brass to strings and percussion — before bringing them together in a thrilling full ensemble finale. The piece will be brought to life with narration by Omari Tau, a versatile performing artist, educator, director and composer with more than 30 years in the arts.
Tau previously toured with the international company of Disney’s The Lion King and has performed at numerous Tony Award-winning theaters. His storytelling and stage presence aim to make the symphonic experience accessible and exciting for young audience members.
In addition to Britten’s classic, the concert will showcase the Symphony’s Young Artist Competition winner, 15-year-old violinist Arthur Bekdjanov. He will perform the first movement of the Violin Concerto in D minor, Op. 47 by Jean Sibelius, one of the most celebrated and technically demanding works in the violin repertoire. The performance highlights the exceptional musical talent emerging from the community and provides an inspiring moment for aspiring young musicians in attendance.
Following the concert, families are invited to participate in the Symphony’s popular Instrument Petting Zoo in the lobby. Children will have the opportunity to try orchestral instruments firsthand under the guidance of symphony musicians, offering a hands-on extension of the concert experience and an opportunity to further spark interest in music education.
“This concert is all about sparking curiosity and joy,” said Maestro Peter Jaffe. “We want children to see, hear, and experience the orchestra up close — and maybe even imagine themselves on stage one day.”
The Family Concert takes place Saturday, March 14, 2026 at 11 a.m. at the Harris Center for the Arts in Folsom. Tickets are available at www.folsomlakesymphony.com.
