A legendary voice from the Bay Area’s golden era of funk, soul and blues will take the stage in Historic Folsom this weekend as Lydia Pense & Cold Blood headline the Sunday edition of the Powerhouse of Blues series at Powerhouse Pub.
The long-running group, fronted by powerhouse vocalist Lydia Pense, performs Sunday, March 15 at 3 p.m., continuing a musical legacy that dates back to the late 1960s when San Francisco emerged as one of the most influential music scenes in the country.
Cold Blood first burst onto the national stage during the peak of the Fillmore era, when the legendary San Francisco venue served as a launching pad for some of the most groundbreaking artists of the time. Promoter Bill Graham quickly recognized the band’s unique sound and the commanding presence of Pense’s voice, signing the group to his newly formed record label shortly after seeing them perform.
At a time when the Bay Area was producing innovative bands that fused funk, soul and rock, Lydia Pense & Cold Blood helped define a distinctive musical movement known as East Bay Grease. The style, which blended tight horn arrangements, driving rhythms and soulful vocals, emerged alongside fellow Bay Area legends such as Tower of Power and became one of the region’s most recognizable musical exports.
Through a series of influential recordings, the band helped shape that sound and establish itself as a powerful force within the evolving soul and R&B landscape. Albums such as Cold Blood, Sisyphus, First Taste of Sin and Thriller became staples of the era, showcasing Pense’s dynamic vocal range and the band’s horn-driven arrangements that fused blues grit with funk energy.
The group’s music carried the spirit of rhythm and blues while embracing the improvisational energy and bold experimentation that defined the San Francisco music scene of the time. Their sound blended elements of blues, soul, gospel and rock into a powerful performance style that resonated with audiences far beyond the Bay Area.
For Lydia Pense, the band’s enduring success has been built on authenticity and raw vocal power. Her voice, often described as both soulful and commanding, became the centerpiece of Cold Blood’s signature sound and helped the group stand out during a period when horn-driven funk bands were dominating the live music circuit.
Decades later, Pense continues to lead the band with the same intensity and passion that first captured audiences more than half a century ago. While the music world has evolved dramatically since Cold Blood’s early days, the group’s commitment to soulful, groove-driven performances remains unchanged.
The band continues to perform throughout the country, introducing new audiences to the powerful blend of funk, blues and soul that defined their early recordings while honoring the musical traditions that inspired them. Their live shows remain rooted in the same energy and tight musicianship that helped establish them as one of the Bay Area’s most respected bands.
Sunday’s performance in Folsom offers fans a rare opportunity to see one of the region’s most historically significant soul and blues acts perform in an intimate venue setting. For longtime followers of the Bay Area music scene, the show represents a living connection to an era when San Francisco and the East Bay helped shape the future of American music.
The Powerhouse of Blues series has become a regular Sunday attraction at Powerhouse Pub, bringing nationally recognized blues and soul performers to Historic Folsom while maintaining the venue’s reputation as one of the region’s most active live music destinations.
