Get ready for an evening of laughter and intrigue as Sutter Street Theatre presents “The Musical Comedy Murders of 1940” opening later this week. The play written by John Bishop and directed locally by Connie Mockenhaupt, this hilarious and suspenseful show will from May 24 through June 23, with performances on Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30 p.m. and Sundays at 4:30 p.m. An added matinee performance will be held at 2:00 p.m. on June 8, offering a special senior rate.
Rated PG, this production promises to keep audiences on the edge of their seats with its clever blend of comedy and mystery. The plot centers around the creative team behind a recent Broadway flop, notorious for the murder of three chorus girls by the mysterious “Stage Door Slasher.” They gather for a backer’s audition of their new show at a wealthy “angel’s” Westchester estate, a location full of sliding panels, secret passageways, and a German maid who seems to be four different people.
The chaos unfolds as the infamous “Slasher” reappears, creating comic mayhem and terror as the blizzard outside traps everyone inside. As the composer, lyricist, actors, and director prepare their performance, bodies begin to drop, knives fly from hidden places, and masked figures lurk behind swiveling bookcases. In a setting where everyone is a suspect, can you guess who the culprit is?
